Shared expenses

Split bills and track group expenses with friends

Trips, flatmates, office lunches, a wedding gift — FinLedger keeps one shared ledger per group, works out who owes whom as you go, and lets everyone settle up when it suits them.

How it works

  1. Create a group — give it a name (say, “Goa Trip”) and pick its currency.
  2. Add people — add members by name, or share an invite link or QR code so friends can join and add expenses themselves.
  3. Add expenses — record who paid and how the cost is shared.
  4. Watch the balances — every member sees what they owe or are owed, updated with each expense.
  5. Settle up — record a payment to clear what you owe one person, in full or for selected expenses.

Four ways to split a bill

Split typeBest forExample
EquallyShared meals, cabs, groceries₹2,400 dinner for 4 → ₹600 each
Exact amountsItemised bills where everyone ordered something different₹450 + ₹700 + ₹350
SharesTime- or size-based costsStayed 2 nights vs 1 night → 2 shares and 1 share
PercentagesAgreed ratios, like rent by room size40% / 35% / 25%

Always know who owes whom

Each group shows a balance per member, so you can see at a glance who is owed money and who needs to pay. Tap a member to see the expenses behind the number. When a group has many cross-payments, Simplify debts reduces them to the fewest transfers that clear everything.

Settle up without the awkward follow-ups

Choose Settle up with a member, pick the pending expenses to clear (or all of them), and FinLedger shows the net amount you will pay or receive. Record how it was paid and the settlement appears in the group's history. For registered members, group payments and settlements are also mirrored into their own personal transactions, so personal budgets stay accurate.

Group members get a browser notification when someone adds an expense, settles up, closes an expense or joins the group. Anyone can mute a busy group from its menu.

Made for the way groups actually spend

Trips with friends

Create a group per trip, add the hotel with a shares split for nights stayed, log fuel and meals equally, and settle once you're home.

Flatmates and shared households

Track rent by percentage, split utilities and groceries equally, and keep the group running month after month. Archive it when someone moves out — the history stays.

Restaurant bills and nights out

One person pays the bill, everyone else's share is recorded instantly. Use exact amounts when orders differ.

Add group expenses from Telegram

Linked your account to the FinLedger Telegram bot? Send add 1200 in Goa Trip for dinner to add an equal split, debts to see what's pending across groups, or settle with Priya in Goa Trip. The bot always shows a preview and asks you to confirm before anything is saved.

Your data, exportable

Any group can be exported to CSV — every expense and how it was split — for your own records.

Frequently asked questions

Do my friends need a FinLedger account to be part of a group?

No. You can add a member by name (email is optional) and track what they owe. To see the group and add expenses themselves, they join through an invite link or QR code and sign in.

Can one group use a currency other than rupees?

Yes. Each group has its own currency, chosen when you create it, so a trip abroad can be tracked in that country's currency.

What does “Simplify debts” do?

It works out the smallest set of payments that clears every balance in the group, so people don't pay each other back in circles.

Is it free?

Yes. FinLedger is free during early access, including shared groups.
