How splitting and settling up work

Every group expense records who paid and how the cost is shared. Balances, simplified debts and settlements all follow from that.

Add an expense

  1. Open the group and choose to add an expense.
  2. Enter the amount and a description, and choose who paid.
  3. Select the people sharing the cost, then choose how to split it.

The four split types

Equal

The total is divided equally among everyone selected. ₹900 between three people is ₹300 each.

Exact amounts

You enter exactly how much each person owes. The amounts must add up to the total.

Shares

Each person gets a number of shares and pays in proportion. Two nights in a ₹6,000 stay against one night is 2 shares and 1 share: ₹4,000 and ₹2,000. Shares also work for families — give a family of three 3 shares.

Percentages

You enter the percentage each person owes. The percentages must add up to 100%.

Balances: who owes whom

A member's balance is what they paid for others minus what others paid for them. A positive balance means they're owed money; a negative one means they owe. Open a member to see the expenses behind their balance.

Simplify debts

In a busy group, A may owe B while B owes C. Simplify debts works out the fewest payments that settle every balance — here, A pays C directly — without changing what anyone owes overall.

Settle up

  1. Choose Settle up and pick the member you're settling with.
  2. Select which pending expenses this payment covers — all of them, or just some.
  3. FinLedger shows the net amount: You'll pay or You'll receive.
  4. Record how it was paid (optional) and confirm. It appears in the group's settlement history.

FinLedger records settlements; it doesn't move money. Pay the person the way you normally would (UPI, cash, bank transfer) and record it here. The upcoming mobile app will open your UPI app with the amount filled in.

Closing and reopening expenses

When an expense is fully dealt with, its creator or a group owner can close it to show it's finished. It can be reopened later if something changes.

Your personal ledger stays in sync

For members with a FinLedger account, what they paid in a group and what they settle is also added to their own transactions, so personal budgets and Rest Money reflect group spending.
