Creating and managing groups

A group is a shared ledger for a set of people — a trip, a flat, a team lunch club. Here's how to run one.

Create a group

  1. Open Shared Expenses and choose New group.
  2. Enter a group name, such as “Goa Trip”.
  3. Choose the group's currency. All of the group's expenses and balances use it.
  4. Choose Create group. You're added as its owner.

Add members

Open the group and choose to invite a member. You have two options:

  • Add a member by name (email optional). Use this for people who won't sign in — you can still split expenses with them and track what they owe.
  • Share an invite link or QR code so people can join with their own account and add expenses themselves. See Invitations.

Owners and members

Everyone in a group can add expenses and settle up. An expense's creator and the group's owners can close or reopen it.

The group menu

The menu on a group's page has these options:

  • Mute notifications — stop push notifications from this group just for you.
  • Archive group — hide a finished group from your active list while keeping its history. Unarchive group brings it back.
  • Leave group — remove yourself once your balance is settled. An owner can't leave while other members remain.
  • Delete permanently (owners only) — remove the group, its expenses, settlements and invite links. This can't be undone.

Export a group

Export any group to CSV to keep a record of every expense and how it was split.

Prefer chatting? Linked Telegram users can list groups, check balances, add equal-split expenses and settle from the bot. See the Telegram bot guide.
